Sinterklaas Celebration with partner school De Kubus

Last week, our school had the pleasure of celebrating Sinterklaas, one of the most cherished traditional holidays in the Netherlands, together with our Dutch partner school De Kubus. The event offered our learners a chance to experience an authentic cultural celebration while strengthening our partnership and sense of community.

What Is Sinterklaas?

Sinterklaas is a beloved Dutch tradition celebrated on December 5th, when children receive gifts, poems, and surprises from Saint Nicholas. The holiday places strong emphasis on creativity, kindness, and thoughtfulness. In schools, it is common for older learners to craft handmade gifts and write personal poems, while younger children enjoy a festive visit from Sinterklaas himself.

Celebrating Together

In collaboration with De Kubus, we embraced these traditions throughout the week:

  • Upper classes worked hard on creating handmade crafts and writing thoughtful poems, following the Dutch tradition of “surprises,” where creativity and humor play an important role.

  • Younger learners were treated to an exciting visit from Sinterklaas, who brought small presents and plenty of smiles. The visit created a magical atmosphere that many children look forward to all year.

Looking Back With Warmth

This weekend, Sinterklaas officially departed the Netherlands for another year. As he sets sail back to Spain, we look back on a truly wonderful celebration—filled with creativity, cultural learning, and joyful moments shared between our two schools.

We are grateful to our partners at De Kubus and to all staff, families, and learners who contributed to making this cross-cultural celebration so special.
